A violent confrontation broke out between local residents and security forces following a protest over a missing fisherman at a Coast Guard post near the Sundarbans forest in Mongla Upazila, Bagerhat District, Bangladesh.
According to local news reports, the incident began on the morning of June 12 in the Jaymonir Ghola area. Several Coast Guard personnel and locals sustained injuries during the clash, forcing security forces to fire warning shots to bring the situation under control.
The incident stems from the disappearance of a 30-year-old fisherman, Miraj Sheikh, who has been missing with no trace for over two months. While his family members and locals claim that Miraj Sheikh was detained and taken away by the Coast Guard, it is reported that there are no official arrest records regarding the matter.
Last Tuesday, locals staged a protest in front of the Coast Guard post, demanding that the authorities disclose the status of the missing man. Tension escalated further on Thursday morning when Miraj Sheikh’s female relatives and other locals went to the pontoon jetty at the post to demand answers.
According to local accounts, the conflict intensified after security personnel attempted to forcefully remove the women. Subsequently, a crowd of locals arriving by boats stormed the post's pontoon and a high-speed vessel. Video footage circulating on social media shows groups of people armed with sticks marching toward the post, as well as scenes of Coast Guard personnel beating locals.
Coast Guard Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan stated that the post was intentionally attacked by criminals.
He added that the Coast Guard’s operations had severely disrupted smuggling activities and the operations of forest-based armed groups, and that these groups are now using violent acts and misinformation to pressure the authorities to remove the post.
