Indigenous Peoples in Bangladesh Demand Protection for Their Lives and Identity

On the occasion of International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples on August 9, indigenous peoples in Bangladesh staged nationwide protests, including in the capital city of Dhaka, demanding the protection of their lives and identity.

According to a report by the Bangladesh-based media outlet "The Daily Star," indigenous peoples across Bangladesh held rallies and carried placards in various parts of the country, including Dhaka, to mark the international day.

The indigenous communities in Bangladesh called on authorities to honor and safeguard their lives and social well-being.

In addition, they demanded the protection of their survival, social welfare, and distinct identity.

Currently, indigenous minority territories and religious sites in Bangladesh face unlawful land grabbing and forced seizures by majority populations.

In response to these land confiscations, indigenous groups protested to demand their land rights, the recognition of their distinct identity, and the preservation of their traditional way of life and culture.

On December 23, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated August 9 as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. The day aims to recognize, protect, and promote the human and fundamental rights of indigenous peoples, including their languages, cultures, traditions, ancestral lands, territory, natural resources, traditional knowledge, environmental conservation, social welfare, education, and development.
