The coast of Arakan is increasingly threatened by widespread illegal fishing activities conducted by Bangladeshi fishermen. These actions appear deliberate, with no significant intervention from Dhaka authorities, including the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
On July 18, 2025, the Arakan Army Sea Patrol Team apprehended three illegal fishing boats, while others escaped to Bangladeshi waters. The exploitation of Arakanese resources by the Bangladeshi fishing community continues to escalate.
The first boat was intercepted at 10:30 AM, approximately 800 meters west of Nga-Khaung-Taw beach.
The second was captured at 2:00 PM, about 5.9 kilometers southwest of Gram-Taw-Chaung coast.
The third was seized at 2:15 PM, roughly 6 kilometers southwest of the same Gram-Taw-Chaung coast.
The local Arakanese fishing community is on high alert due to the surge in illegal fishing by Bangladeshi fishermen. Authorities in Dhaka must take effective measures to address this issue before it escalates further. The Arakan government is implementing necessary actions to combat illegal fishing.
