Departmental Staff Led by Township Party Committee Conduct Collective Cleanup of Mya Kan Tha Kandawgyi Lake to Ensure Clean Drinking Water for Maungdaw Residents
News ၊ October 9, 2026

In Maungdaw, Arakan State, following the end of the monsoon season, the Mya Kan Tha Kandawgyi Lake which has been distributing water to the town since September suffered water contamination due to rotting grass. To ensure local residents can use clean drinking water daily, a collective cleanup operation was conducted this morning, October 9, led by the Township Party Committee alongside various departments.
The cleanup initiative was executed on the morning of October 9, led by the Maungdaw Township Party Committee and joined by over 100 departmental staff, including representatives from the AAP, General Administration, Development Services, Fire Services, HDCO, DLEPS, the Party Youth Wing, and Health Services.
A member of the Maungdaw Township Party Committee told that the Kandawgyi Lake, which supplies drinking water daily to Maungdaw residents, began experiencing discoloration and foul odors in October due to decaying algae, dried grass, and fallen leaves along its perimeter. Consequently, a timely cleanup was carried out to remove the algae and rotting grass from the lake.
A local resident noted that Maungdaw residents primarily rely on Kandawgyi Lake for their drinking water. Since the last week of September, as the water turned discolored and emitted foul odors, residents grew concerned about potential outbreaks of cholera and skin diseases.
Currently, alongside the cleanup of Kandawgyi Lake, the Township Development Services Department is continuing to manage and maintain water pipes, usage, and purification to ensure proper water flow and an uninterrupted, regular supply across Maungdaw Town.
