The Arakan Army (AA) released 14 Bangladeshi fishermen yesterday, April 1, four days after they were detained for illegally fishing within Arakan maritime territory.
The fishermen were apprehended around 7:00 AM on March 28 while returning to Shah Porir Dwip (Shinma Phyu Island) in Teknaf. They were intercepted near the "Na Khaung To" area of the Naf River along with three fishing boats.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Hanif Ar-Rahman Bhuiyan, Commander of the Teknaf-based Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion 2, confirmed that the 14 fishermen and their three boats have safely returned.
According to previous statements from the Arakan Army, the group often releases detained fishermen without legal action as a gesture to promote and strengthen bilateral friendship between the two neighboring regions.
