Arakan Authorities Arrest 18 Illegal Fishermen with Three Boats in Arakan’s Waters

On August 29, 2025, the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) took decisive action to tackle illegal fishing, detaining 122 fishermen and seizing 19 fishing boats for violating Arakan’s territorial waters. However, illegal fishing in Arakan’s waters continues, indicating that constructive cooperation from Bangladesh remains necessary.
Yesterday, on August 31, 2025, Arakan authorities arrested an additional 18 illegal fishermen in a single day from three fishing boats. The incidents are detailed as follows:
On August 31, 2025, Arakan forces from the coastal security patrol arrested six Bangladeshi nationals aboard the first fishing boat for illegally entering and fishing over 800 meters off the western coast of Udaung Chaungwa in Arakan’s territorial waters.
On August 31, 2025, Arakan forces from the coastal security patrol arrested six Bangladeshi nationals aboard the second fishing boat for illegally entering and fishing over 300 meters off the western coast of Thayartaw (Muslim) village in Arakan’s territorial waters.
On August 31, 2025, Arakan forces from the coastal security patrol arrested six Bangladeshi nationals aboard the third fishing boat for illegally entering and fishing approximately 820 kilometers off the western coast of Grintaw Chaungwa in Arakan’s territorial waters, where they were subsequently investigated.

As a sovereign entity, Arakan authorities will handle the currently detained fishermen in accordance with existing laws and regulations. The Arakan government is committed to addressing the illegal fishing issue through constructive collaboration with counterparts in Bangladesh.
