The Union Election Commission (UEC), under the military council, has disqualified U Tin Htoo Aung, the candidate for Rakhine Ethnic Affairs Representative in the Yangon Region legislature, according to sources.
On November 21, the UEC notified the Yangon Region Election Sub-commission that it had disqualified U Tin Htoo Aung as a candidate.
He was removed from the candidate list on the grounds that he violates Section 10(j) of the Political Parties and Election Law.
Section 10(j) states that individuals who have verifiable connections with organizations declared as unlawful associations, groups designated by the state as committing terrorist acts, armed insurgent organizations that are rebelling against the state, or members of such organizations are not eligible to contest in elections.
U Tin Htoo Aung is a Rakhine national engaged in charity work. Rakhine people in Yangon say he was one of the seven Rakhine ethnic affairs candidates and was considered a strong contender likely to win.
Originally, there were seven candidates competing for the Yangon Region Rakhine Ethnic Affairs Minister position in the military council’s election, but now only six remain.
The remaining candidates who will contest are:
U Nay Min Tun (Union Solidarity and Development Party)
U Tha Sein (People’s Party)
Daw Aye Mar Lwin (People’s Pioneer Party)
U Tin Maung (Shan and Nationalities Democratic Party)
Daw Khin Nwe Si Aung (Peace Broker Party)
Independent candidate U Nyi Nyi
They will now compete in the election.
