The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a prominent UN agency, issued a statement on September 12, 2025, addressing the reported deaths of children following a brutal attack on a private school in Tha Yet Ta Pin village, Kyauktaw Township, Arakan (Rakhine) State, Myanmar. The statement read:

“UNICEF is deeply alarmed by reports of an overnight attack on a boarding school in Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State, Myanmar, which reportedly killed and injured children as they slept.”

The statement highlighted that the attack is part of a pattern of escalating violence in Rakhine State, where children and families are bearing the brunt of the conflict. Relentless attacks are instilling fear, displacing families, and exacerbating their suffering. Children are losing their lives in places meant to be safe havens, such as their homes, schools, and neighborhoods.

According to data from the Humanitarian and Development Coordination Office (HDCO), at least 697 civilians under the age of 18 have been killed by the Myanmar junta in Rakhine State since November 2023, accounting for 18 percent of all civilian casualties in the region.

All stakeholders should urge the international community and key actors to apply more effective pressure and take decisive actions to prevent the Myanmar junta from targeting civilian locations in Arakan.

Credible reports indicate that, due to military setbacks on the ground, the Myanmar junta is planning to conduct additional targeted airstrikes against civilians in Rakhine State.
