The Department of Transport under the Arakan People's Revolutionary Government issued a comprehensive public safety advisory today, outlining critical precautions and regulations for road, vehicle, and maritime travel during the monsoon season.
The department has compiled a total of 20 guidelines, evenly split into 10 rules for commuting and maritime transit, and 10 rules for vehicular safety, to ensure public safety amid hazardous weather conditions.
For commuting and water transport, the department urges the public to always monitor up-to-date weather forecasts before traveling and to wear life jackets properly and consistently. Commuters must board and disembark from vessels or vehicles only after they have come to a complete stop, prepare emergency kits within arm's reach, and maintain order when moving through crowded queues.
Concurrently, the advisory strictly prohibits deploying vessels during heavy rains and severe gales, overloading with excessive passengers or cargo, and making sudden, disruptive movements on board.
Rushing during boarding and consuming alcohol while traveling by water routes are also entirely banned.
Regarding vehicular and road safety, drivers are instructed to thoroughly inspect their vehicle’s mechanical condition before departing and to moderate driving speeds to adjust to slippery roads.
The department orders drivers to turn on headlights during rainfall to maintain optimal visibility, maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles, and ensure all windows and mirrors are clean before starting a journey.
On the other hand, motorists are cautioned not to use hazard lights unnecessarily, and are strictly forbidden from speeding through stagnant water, attempting to cross flooded roads, or slamming on the brakes suddenly.
Engaging in distracting behaviors, such as using mobile phones while operating a vehicle, must also be avoided.
The Department of Transport emphasized that preventing water and road transport accidents during the monsoon season requires collective cooperation and a shared sense of responsibility from all citizens, rather than relying solely on individual efforts.
The authority concluded its statement by strongly advising the public to strictly obey traffic laws and transport regulations to ensure maximum safety on every journey throughout the rainy season.
