According to local aid workers, around seven townships in Arakan including Mrauk-U, Minbya, Kyauktaw, Ponnagyun, Buthidaung, Taungup, and Maungdaw are experiencing continuous heavy rainfall, leaving thousands of homes submerged and approximately 100,000 people hit by floods.

Water began entering over a hundred villages across these townships on July 9, prompting the Arakan Army and volunteer groups to evacuate residents to safer ground.

In Mrauk-U Township alone, over 30 villages and wards have been flooded. Local residents are currently taking shelter in safer locations, such as monasteries and high-rise buildings, according to an aid worker assisting displaced persons.

He added that in Paletwa Township of Chin State, which is also controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), no fewer than twenty villages are facing floods alongside the threat of consecutive landslides.

It has not yet been able to independently verify the casualties related to the floods.

Meteorologist U Win Naing forecasts that due to Typhoon BAVI, a very strong typhoon entering the sea east of the Philippines in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, monsoon winds are blowing directly into the Arakan coast over 2,000 miles away. As a result, townships in northern Arakan may continue to experience landslides and flooding.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology released a statement noting that strong monsoons in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal could cause isolated heavy rainfall in 11 states and regions, including Arakan, between July 10 and 18.

Furthermore, according to the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS), Arakan is facing its worst record-breaking flood in twenty years, which could lead to prolonged flooding. The floodwaters could damage approximately 3,696 hectares of agricultural farmland in the region and impact tens of thousands of local residents.
