The United League of Arakan / Arakan Army awarded cash prizes today, August 19, to three responsible citizens who helped capture a child rape suspect from Kyauktaw who had escaped from the custody of the Department of Law Enforcement and Public Security (DLEPS).
The escaped child rape suspect, 46-year-old U Maung Aye Hla from Thayet Tapin Village in Kyauktaw Township, committed a child rape offense against an underage girl from Kyauk Ta Long Village, Thayet Tapin Village Tract, Kyauktaw Township. While on the run, he was arrested at his home on July 29 by the DLEPS of the Arakha Government.
Subsequently, the suspect was detained at Chauk Pauk. However, on August 18 at around 4:00 AM, taking advantage of a shift change among the guards, he broke the Chauk Pauk padlock and ankle chains and escaped from custody.
Following his escape, members of the DLEPS formed search teams to track him down. Based on information provided by a responsible citizen, DLEPS officers together with helpful local residents jointly surrounded and apprehended him near the Maha Myat Muni Pagoda.
For demonstrating civic responsibility, the ULA/Arakan Army commended and awarded a cash prize of 300,000 MMK to Maung Myo Hein Kyaw from Nyaung Chaung Village, who provided the crucial tip-off. The other two citizens who assisted in the arrest were awarded 200,000 MMK each.
The captured sexual abuse and child rape suspect, Maung Aye Hla, reportedly lured a 14-year-old eldest daughter of a family working as hired farm guards in the Yoon Chaung area of Kyauktaw Township on April 6, taking her away under the pretext of work, and forcibly assaulted her that night.
Family members also stated that Maung Aye Hla had sexually threatened and coerced the same family's 8-year-old younger daughter into inappropriate acts.
Earlier on August 14, the ULA also awarded a cash prize of 1,000,000 MMK to U San Tin Aung, administrator of Pyin Won Village, for assisting in the re-apprehension of Kyaw Win Che, a convict who had escaped while serving a sentence for rape at the Sittwe District Prison in Arakan State.
It is reported that the ULA/Arakan Army will continue to grant appropriate cash rewards to citizens who show civic initiative by helping arrest and hand over offenders.
