On the past October 4th and 5th, the terrorist fascist military deliberately targeted and bombed IDP camps in Ponnagyun Township, Rakhine State, namely Byala IDP Camp and Pan Nila IDP Camp. Due to these attacks, a total of 8 civilian IDPs were killed, and 11 were injured.

The complete list of those killed and injured is as follows:

Such deliberate targeting and attacking of IDP camps also occurred about one week after the massive, brutal massacre on September 28th near Kyauk Taw Town, at the Indian Market area, where 50 civilians were killed and about 60 were injured. In other words, it is a stance, an action, and a commission that shows complete disregard for the condemnations and objections by the international community, including the United Nations, to stop attacks targeting civilians.

Under such circumstances, the news coverage by a major media outlet like BBC-Burmese Service regarding the targeting and bombing of IDP camps where innocent civilians are living has become something to be cautious and mindful about. The main reason is that the fascist military's atrocities against civilians are being reported in a way that is ambiguous, subtle, and unclear, as if the attacks were directed at 'military targets.'

Let me give an example. In reporting the October 4th attack on Bya-la IDP Camp, the headline given by the BBC was "Six people killed in bombing of IDP camp in Ponnagyun Township." Although the headline may seem normal at first glance, the phrasing such as 'six people killed,' 'issued by AA,' and 'no one knows who they are due to burning on the whole body' makes the killing of 'civilian IDPs' ambiguous.

Furthermore, regarding the October 6th bombing of Pan Nila IDP Camp, the headline given by the BBC was "Casualties reported in bombing of IDP camp in Ponnagyun," and in the body of the article, it was written that '1 person was killed and 2 were injured,' but it did not clearly and specifically state that those killed and injured were 'civilian IDPs.'

If we compare the coverage of these two incidents with other media outlets, BBC-Burmese Service's presentation is highly unusual. There is no need to follow the ULA/AA's statement narrative for every incident; local journalists themselves should contact the affected families and aid organizations and report the true news accurately and precisely, just like other news agencies.

What kind of dangerous news reporting method is this?

Here, BBC-Burmese Service, being a major media outlet, is an organization that already knows the rules and ethics that news agencies and journalists must follow. However, reporting such inhuman bombing and killing incidents by the junta military in an ambiguous, vague, and unclear manner is, on the one hand, encouraging and aiding the narratives of military lobbyists.

The reason is that the military junta and military lobbyists often spread baseless and illogical propaganda regarding such bombings of IDP camps, such as 'there were AA members there, so it was bombed,' 'because AA stationed themselves and stored supplies, it was bombed,' and so on.

Therefore, if the bombing of 'innocent civilians, IDPs' is not clearly exposed and reported, it is affecting—whether intentionally or not—as if providing support to their narrative.

At this point, BBC-Burmese Service may have had an understanding with the military since the coup, and may have had some give-and-take or understanding to be able to go in and out to obtain news related to the military junta.

However, if such an understanding and compromise with the military junta is the kind of compromise that causes the deaths and injuries of civilian war-displaced people in Rakhine State to be taken lightly and treated ambiguously, then it becomes not only a loss for the people who have already suffered, but also a threat that provides a conduit for the fascist military to carry out further atrocities against those who are still alive.
