Perpetrator Sentenced to Death for Rape and Murder in Ponnagyun(Two Accomplices Sentenced to 20 Years Imprisonment Each)

One of three suspects arrested and prosecuted in connection with the rape and murder of a woman in Ponnagyun Township, Arakan, has been sentenced to death, while the remaining two were sentenced to 20 years in prison each, the Arakkha Government announced yesterday, August 6.

According to the statement, after the body of a 23-year-old woman was discovered on the night of July 22 in a ditch near Tan Swea Village, Ponnagyun Township, subsequent investigations led to the identification and arrest of three suspects.

Investigations revealed that the primary suspect, Maung Tin Win, confessed to raping and murdering the woman, while the other two suspects were also involved in the crime.

Following the investigation, the suspects were arrested on July 24 and prosecuted at the Sittwe District Court on July 31, according to the statement.

Based on court findings, witness testimonies, and the suspect's confession, primary suspect Maung Tin Win was sentenced to death under Section 302(1)(c) of the Penal Code. The other two suspects, Maung Aye Kyaw (aka Maung Pu) and Maung Than Soe (aka Nga Lone), were each sentenced to 20 years imprisonment under Section 364 of the Penal Code.

The statement also highlighted that the Arakha People's Revolutionary Government is taking decisive action against severe crimes including murder, rape, and child sexual abuse under a strict policy to ensure that perpetrators do not escape justice.
