More than 5,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in camps in Kyaukphyu Township, Rakhine State, are facing critical shortages of blankets, mosquito nets, and toilet pans (squatting pans) in addition to basic food and shelter needs, according to local sources.

Due to ongoing fighting in Kyaukphyu town, people who fled their homes are now struggling as winter has arrived. They urgently require warm blankets, mosquito nets, and toilet pans, a representative from the Brahmaso Foundation, which is assisting the IDPs, told AB News.

“With winter here, they are suffering from the cold. They don’t have blankets to protect themselves from the chilly weather, especially the children and elderly. We are very worried that many will fall seriously ill from the cold,” the representative said.

He added that mosquitoes are rampant in the areas where the IDPs are sheltering, making mosquito nets another urgent priority.

“There are so many mosquitoes here. They bite even more at night when people try to sleep. We’re afraid of outbreaks of dengue fever, malaria, or other mosquito-borne diseases. With so many people living closely together, we also fear the rapid spread of contagious illnesses,” he continued.

Moreover, most IDP camps severely lack sufficient latrines and toilet pans. The resulting poor sanitation raises serious concerns about potential outbreaks of diarrheal and waterborne diseases. IDPs and local aid groups are appealing to humanitarian organizations and donors to urgently provide toilet pans and improve sanitation facilities.

Fighting between the Arakan Army (AA) and the Myanmar military junta continues intensely in Kyaukphyu Township. Heavy artillery shelling and airstrikes by the junta’s air force and navy targeting civilian villages have forced thousands of residents to flee to safer areas.
