It has been learned that over 30,000 local residents in Kyaukphyu Township have been displaced due to escalating military tensions between the State Administration Council (SAC) and the Arakan Army (AA).
Because of the current fighting, civilians in Kyaukphyu Township have been forced to urgently flee their homes and villages to seek refuge in safer locations. Local sources report that the number of displaced persons in Kyaukphyu Township is rising day by day.
"We had to flee urgently, so we didn't get a chance to bring anything with us. We just ran out with the clothes on our backs. We didn't have enough time to grab blankets or warm clothing either, so we're struggling terribly against the cold," an unnamed IDP told AB News.
A representative from the Arakan Responders for Emergency (ARE) aid group stated that being displaced under these circumstances is even more difficult, as people were already facing severe hardships due to the multi-faceted blockades imposed by the SAC over the past two years since the fighting began.
Among the over 30,000 displaced people in Kyaukphyu Township, ARE is planning to provide aid to around 2,000 families from the most vulnerable villages, which lack support and are in most urgent need of emergency supplies.
The group stated that for this food aid operation, which requires an emergency budget of 100 million kyat, ARE has already committed 50 million kyat.
Similarly, ARE said they urgently need donors to continue their relief programs and welcome any organizations willing to collaborate with them.
Currently, in addition to emergency food supplies, there is a critical need for warm clothing, shelter, clean water, powdered milk for newborns, medication for pregnant women, and sanitation facilities.
