The Governor of Mizoram, Vijay Kumar Singh, has stated that the Indian government is planning to extend and construct a railway network up to the southern part of Mizoram state, at the India-Myanmar border, to facilitate the implementation of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP).
Governor Vijay Kumar Singh made this remark during a meeting with the High-Level Committee on Countryside and Border Security (CCCS), operating under the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, held at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl on March 17th.
It is also reported that a 12-member delegation led by Aparna Ray, Joint Secretary of the (CCCS) team, is currently on a 10-day visit to study ground-level conditions in the border region regarding the plan to construct a railway line from India to the Myanmar border.
The Governor stated that currently, a railway line has been constructed up to Sairang, allowing Aizawl city to be included in the national railway network for the first time.
He added that extending the railway line to the southern part of the state and connecting it with the Kaladan Project will significantly transform the trade sector of Northeast India in the future.
This project will be integrated with the central government's "Vibrant Villages Programme" to enhance infrastructure in border areas.
Regarding the implementation of the Kaladan Project (KMMTTP), the state government side stated that border area security on the Myanmar side remains a significant challenge. They mentioned that coordination is ongoing with the Arakan Army (AA), which holds influence within the project area, and that they are engaging with regional forces for stability on the Myanmar side.
The Chief Minister of Mizoram has also indicated that the government will make future policy decisions based on the findings and report from the CCCS team's ground-level assessment.
The Governor emphasized that Mizoram is one of India's most politically stable and peaceful states, and with its agriculture-based economy growing, providing infrastructure development like this will be a crucial step for the state's future.
