Increasing numbers of local Bengalis in Bangladesh refugee camps are being accepted as so-called Rohingya Muslim refugees

News February 9, 2026

According to ground-level news and information, in the Muslim refugee camps in Bangladesh, many local residents from Cox's Bazar district are being accepted as so-called Rohingya Muslim refugees.

On March 4, 2025, some residents of Cox's Bazar district in Bangladesh began prioritizing obtaining relief supplies from UNHCR over their Bangladeshi citizenship. Due to this desire, there has been an increase in registrations as so-called Rohingya Muslim refugees.

Because of people being accepted as so-called Rohingya Muslim refugees, the population in Bangladesh's refugee camps has increased significantly. This has been reported by local people and in the regional news outlet Kaler Kantho.

Additionally, during a press briefing related to the February 24, 2025 election, Bangladesh Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin stated that they had taken measures to prevent so-called Rohingya Muslim refugees from being included in the voter list. Among the new developments, some local Bangladeshi citizens have registered as refugees alongside Rohingya to obtain UNHCR assistance because they want it. The majority are from Ukhiya and Teknaf townships.

Currently, as aid is decreasing, they are trying to reclaim their status as Bangladeshi citizens. When checking against refugee lists and citizenship records, such cases have been identified and exposed.

At present, Bangladeshi citizens are also marrying so-called Rohingya Muslims in the refugee camps, leading to an uncontrolled and massive population increase, according to ground-level news sources.
