The death toll from an airstrike on Ngalunzu Upper and Lower villages in Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State, has risen to nine after one of the injured civilians died while undergoing medical treatment, according to local sources.

The victim was identified as U Maung Than Kyi (41), a resident of Ngalunzu Lower Village. He died at around 1:10 p.m. on December 15 while receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the attack. He was among 16 civilians wounded in the airstrike.

Local residents said that at approximately 7:34 p.m. on December 11, a jet fighter belonging to the Myanmar military commission dropped two 500-pound bombs on Ngalunzu Upper Village and Ngalunzu Lower Village.

The bombing killed eight civilians instantly and injured 16 others, including U Maung Than Kyi. After five days of emergency medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on December 15.

With his death, the total number of fatalities from the bombing of the two villages has increased to nine.

Local sources added that as the military commission continues to face setbacks against the Arakan Army on the Arakan front, it has stepped up airstrikes and heavy artillery attacks on towns and villages largely inhabited by civilians not involved in the fighting.
