A young man in his twenties lost one of his legs after stepping on a landmine in northern Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, near the Bangladesh border, according to local reports.

The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Ko Myo Lin Soe from Apauk Wa Village in Kyauktaw Township. He had been living and working in Maungdaw Township at the time of the incident.

The explosion occurred at around 2:00 p.m. on December 28, when he and two friends went near Milepost No. 50 along the Myanmar–Bangladesh border to set up fowl traps. A buried landmine detonated, severing his left leg.

He is currently receiving emergency medical treatment.

This latest incident follows a series of recent landmine explosions in the area. On the evening of November 17, 55-year-old U Abulah Chain from Ngan Chaung North Village in Maungdaw Township died after stepping on a landmine while herding buffaloes near Kwet Ta Maw Village.

Similarly, on November 14, U Daung Roin, a 42-year-old Mro man from Khun Taing Village, was killed when he stepped on a landmine while going into the mountains to cut bamboo.

Landmines have become a growing threat to civilians in Rakhine State, particularly to farmers and forest workers whose livelihoods require them to travel through rural and mountainous areas where explosives are believed to be present.
