A member of the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) who suffered severe injuries after stepping on a landmine planted by the extremist Islamist militant groups ARSA/RSO near the Bangladesh border has died while receiving treatment.

BGB has confirmed that Nayek Akhtar Hossain, who sustained critical injuries after triggering the mine, passed away on the night of October 31 during treatment. Nayek Akhtar Hossain (personal ID: 62126), a squad leader under the Reju Amtali Border Outpost of BGB Battalion-34, died at 12:30 a.m. on October 31, according to Lt. Col. S.M. Khairul Alam, Commanding Officer of BGB-34.

The incident occurred on the night of October 12 while Nayek Akhtar Hossain was on patrol near Border Pillar No. 41 in Tanbura area, Naikhongchhari upazila, Bandarban district. He stepped on a buried landmine planted by the extremist Islamist militant groups ARSA/RSO.

The explosion severed both of his legs, causing life-threatening injuries. He succumbed 19 days later while undergoing treatment.

The site of the blast—near Pillar No. 41—hosts a temporary BGB outpost, surrounded only by strongly fortified camps of the ARSA/RSO militant groups, which have been entrenched there with BGB’s tacit support.

Local residents firmly allege that ARSA/RSO, with BGB’s assistance, have established fortified bases, laid landmines around them, and routinely engage in armed robbery, extortion, abduction for ransom, rape, and murder against local civilians. They claim that BGB shares profits and takes commissions from the militants’ criminal earnings, effectively enabling their operations.

Despite knowing full well that their own soldier, Nayek Akhtar Hossain, died from a mine planted by ARSA/RSO, BGB refuses to blame the militants and has instead falsely and baselessly accused the Arakan Army (AA) of planting the mine.

Regarding the incident, a local resident stated:

“This has nothing to do with the AA. The AA isn’t even present in that area. From Pillars 39, 40, 41, to 42, only ARSA/RSO camps are stationed there under BGB protection. Come and see for yourself—you’ll witness it. BGB has been colluding with these terrorist groups along the entire border for a long time. They provide shelter, weapons, and ammunition to ARSA/RSO. When a BGB soldier dies from one of their own planted mines, they panic—not because they can’t swallow their own medicine, but because their dirty dealings are exposed. So they deliberately scapegoat the AA, which has no connection whatsoever.”
