On December 10, 2025 — International Human Rights Day — a Myanmar junta fighter jet dropped bombs on the 300-bed Mrauk-U General Hospital in Rakhine State, completely destroying the facility and killing at least 33 civilians (mostly patients) while injuring more than 70 others, according to witnesses, aid workers, and the Arakan Army (AA).

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated: “I am appalled and condemn in the strongest possible terms the strikes on the Rakhine hospital which left dozens of civilians dead and wounded. I reiterate my deep concerns about new waves of acute violence and fear in #Myanmar ahead of the military-imposed ‘election’.”

More than 30 international media outlets have covered and condemned the attack, including: Al Jazeera (Qatar), Arab News (Saudi Arabia), AsiaOne (Singapore), BBC News (UK), Bloomberg (US), BusinessWorld Online (Philippines), Channels Television (Nigeria), Deutsche Welle (Germany), Dhaka Tribune (Bangladesh), Digital Journal (Canada), Firstpost (India), Free Malaysia Today (Malaysia), France 24 (France), Hindustan Times (India), Laotian Times (Laos), Modern Diplomacy (Switzerland), NBC News (US), Northeast Now (India), Outlook India (India), Radio France Internationale (France), Reuters (UK/US), The Hindu (India), The Japan Times (Japan), The Korea Times (South Korea), The Star (Malaysia), The Straits Times (Singapore), The Times of India (India), Telegraph India (India), Yeni Şafak (Turkey), and Zee News (India), among others.

Prominent reports highlighted:

  • Reuters: The hospital was “completely destroyed” in an area with no recent fighting, part of the junta’s escalating aerial campaign before the disputed December 28 elections.

  • BBC: The strike is the latest blow in the junta’s losing war against ethnic militias, with the planned vote widely dismissed as a sham meant to grant the regime a guise of legitimacy.

  • Bloomberg: At least 33 people died in the deliberate bombing of a civilian hospital, underscoring the regime’s intensified terror tactics in rebel-held regions.

The United League of Arakan (ULA) declared:

“Yesterday’s airstrike by the terrorist Myanmar junta on the public hospital in Mrauk-U on December 10 — International Human Rights Day — is yet another example of how the fascist regime in Naypyidaw blatantly kills its own citizens, committing war crimes in broad daylight with no regard for human life.”
