Sheikh Burahan, the spokesperson for the militant group ARSA, released a video via the "ARSA Spokesperson" Telegram channel on May 2, claiming that the group is receiving backing from the Bangladeshi government.
In the video, Sheikh Burahan stated, "The Bangladeshi government is now supporting us from behind." He issued threats to launch violent attacks against the people of Arakan and vowed to reclaim lands in Buthidaung and Maungdaw where the Rakhine people are currently establishing new villages and farming".
Furthermore, he urged the Rohingya population to unite against the Arakan Army (AA) and expressed gratitude to the President of Bangladesh for providing them refuge. These statements appear to be a strategic move to mobilize the community through inflammatory rhetoric.
However, recent reports from Bangladesh-based media indicate that Muslim refugees within the camps are actually calling for legal action against ARSA’s violent activities. The group is frequently accused of carrying out forced arrests, kidnappings, and extortion within the refugee camps, where approximately 30% of households have experienced displacement.
In addition to internal camp violence, ARSA continues to conduct ambushes, killings, and kidnappings against civilians along the Arakan-Bangladesh border. Such instability remains a primary barrier to regional recovery and the safe return of displaced populations.
