In Paletwa Town, including other areas of Paletwa District and Samie Township, the Arakkha Health Department is providing free vaccinations for three days, from January 15 to January 17, to children aged from 2 months to 5 years old.
This marks the third time the ULA has organized free vaccination campaigns. For this round, the vaccines include DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), OPV (oral polio vaccine), rotavirus (severe diarrhea), hepatitis B (liver inflammation/jaundice), chickenpox, and meningitis (brain membrane inflammation) vaccines.
In the first round, vaccinations covered children from 2 months to 3 years old. The second round expanded to 2 months to 5 years old, and this third round also targets children from 2 months to 5 years old.
A resident of Paletwa Town told ONN: "Amid the difficulties caused by the war and travel restrictions, if an infectious disease breaks out, it would be extremely hard to control. That's why providing preventive vaccinations in advance like this helps save the lives of young children. Despite the challenges, I would like to express great thanks to the Arakan People's Health Department for providing these free vaccinations. After getting our children vaccinated, I feel much more secure and protected."
Paletwa is an area prone to diarrhea outbreaks. In early November last year, there was an outbreak of this disease that spread from Lungtalai in India, near the Paletwa District border. The Arakkha Health Department had to conduct emergency field treatments. Due to that infectious disease outbreak, the Paletwa-India border crossing was temporarily closed.
