Arakan Law Enforcement Announcement: Three Arrested in Ponnagyun Rape and Murder Case

The Department of Law Enforcement and Public Security (DLEPS) has announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in Ponnagyun Township, Arakan State . The crime occurred on July 18, 2026, and the body was discovered on July 22.
Brutal Crime Uncovered
According to the official DLEPS statement released on July 27, 2026, the body of a woman was discovered in a ditch within a mango grove near Tan Swea Village in Ponnagyun Township at approximately 4:45 AM on July 22. The victim was found face down, hands cuffed behind her back, wearing only a white long-sleeved shirt, with a head wound and in an advanced state of decomposition.
The victim was identified as a 23-year-old woman from Aung Seik Village who had been reported missing since July 18.
Investigation and Arrests
Following the discovery, DLEPS launched an investigation, registering case number (Pa) 18/2026 under Section 302 of the Penal Code on July 23.
Investigators identified and arrested the primary suspect, Maung Tin Win, 37, from Sin Inn Gyi Village, Ponnagyun Township, at 9:20 AM on July 23. During interrogation, Maung Tin Win reportedly confessed to the crimes, detailing how he and two accomplices carried out the attack.
According to the suspect's confession, on the day of the incident, he lured the victim to the mango grove under the pretext of needing assistance with a social matter. Two accomplices, identified as Maung Aye Kyaw, 29, and Maung Than Soe, 21, accompanied them on a sidecar motorcycle.
Details of the Attack
The suspect stated that upon arriving at the location, he ordered his accomplices to handcuff the victim and blindfold her with cloth. The accomplices were then instructed to wait by the roadside while he remained alone with the victim.
When the victim refused his sexual advances, Maung Tin Win reportedly struck her on the neck and head with a rock before raping her for approximately 10 minutes. After the assault, the victim was deceased, and the suspect disposed of her body by dropping it into a water channel to conceal it from view.
When questioned, the two accomplices confirmed the account provided by the primary suspect. All three suspects were formally arrested and charged on July 24.
Legal Consequences
The DLEPS statement emphasized the severe legal penalties for such crimes, citing Section 302 of the Penal Code, which prescribes the death penalty for murder, and Section 376, which prescribes a sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment for rape.
