To mark the first day of the Myanmar New Year, the Arakan Army (AA) released 67 prisoners from detention centers in Maungdaw District.

Those released included individuals detained for links to the Islamic extremist group ARSA, connections with the Military Commission, and various other offenses.

The release took place on April 17, New Year’s Day, under a gesture of amnesty.

According to the details of the release: 3 individuals detained for selling rice to the ARSA extremist group. 35 prisoners with connections to the Military Commission forces. 4 prisoners detained for transporting arms and ammunition. 3 prisoners detained for failing to report the presence of Military Commission soldiers. 22 prisoners held for various other criminal offenses.

The release was conducted in the presence of local administrative officials from Maungdaw District after the prisoners signed a formal pledge of conduct.

Simultaneously, the Arakan Army has intensified security measures within Maungdaw to prevent the infiltration of Islamic extremist militants posing as local civilians.

Security forces have been deployed across city wards, and full-time patrols and inspections are being conducted at all entry and exit points of the city.
