The extremist Islamist militant terrorist group ARSA has been carrying out arrests and killings of civilians, ambushing travelers, and planting mines in northern Maungdaw, resulting in 2 civilians killed and 5 missing within two days, according to sources.

On March 8, in the northern part of Maungdaw Township, near Wela Taung heading toward Kha Maung Seik, ARSA terrorists ambushed a trawlargy (hand-tractor) loaded with goods.

In that attack, Win Myat Aung (age 31, son of U Maung San Kyaw from Khaung Laung Ywar Thit village, Minbya Township) and Soe Than Naing (age 18, son of U Thint Ka Kyaw) were killed. The remaining one person on the vehicle is missing, according to local residents.

The two deceased were residents of Kha Maung Seik village in Maungdaw Township, working as hired transporters using a trawlargy to carry goods for a living.

The Islamist terrorist ARSA group claimed in their propaganda video (dated March 8) that the mine attack targeted Arakan Army (AA) members dressed in military uniforms, and they seized over 30 firearms, nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition, an RPG, and a drone from the incident.

On March 9, in the northern part of Maungdaw Township, near Mee Taik village, six Daingnet (ethnic group) civilians from the area who went fishing were allegedly abducted by those claiming to be AA. Two of them reached a Rakhine village on the Bangladesh border with injuries, while the remaining 4 are missing, according to sources.

According to a statement from HDCO, from November 2023 to January 2026, attacks by Muslim armed groups resulted in 162 civilians killed, 22 injured, approximately 15 escapees/returnees, and up to 33 missing.

The actions of Muslim armed groups in northern Maungdaw are not self-defense but appear to constitute genocide against civilians. HDCO urges the international community to urgently investigate this.
