19 Students and Youths Detained for Drug Use Handed Back to Parents in Kyauktaw

Nineteen students and youths under the age of 20 from Kyauktaw Township, who had been temporarily detained for using psychotropic drugs, were handed back to their parents today, August 11, by the Arakkha Government.

The 19 temporarily detained students and youths who were handed back range in age from 15 to 20. The group includes 13 students attending Grades 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, as well as 6 non-student youths.

The students and youths were handed over to their parents on the morning of August 11 by officials from the Arakan Army (AA), the Department of Law Enforcement and Public Security (DLEPS) of the Arakkha Government, township party officials, and local community administrative authorities.

Prior to being handed over, the students and youths underwent health checkups and were subjected to disciplinary action of 3 to 5 strokes of corporal punishment (caning).

The students and youths had been held in detention for nearly 30 days due to their drug use.

Parents expressed their joy and gratitude to government officials for temporarily detaining and disciplining the youth regarding their drug use.

In Arakan territory controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), the DLEPS department of the Arakkha Government has been conducting drug elimination efforts alongside law enforcement activities. The temporary detention was carried out after receiving information and investigating reports that some students and youths in Kyauktaw Township were using drugs.
