In Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, the 15th Chakma (also known as Daingnet) National Day ceremony was held today, January 7, with lively and vibrant celebrations, AB News observed on the ground.
The event was organized under the leadership of the Maungdaw District Chakma Ethnic Affairs Committee, with security arrangements and necessary logistical support provided by the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government.
The ceremony was attended by monks, Chakma leaders, military and civilian representatives of the Arakan Army (AA), and officials. Thousands of Chakma ethnic people from Buthidaung, Maungdaw, Ponnygun, Kyauktaw, Minbya, Mrauk-U, and Rathedaung townships also joined the celebrations.

At the event, U Tun Phyu, spokesperson for Chakma Ethnic Affairs from Peinchaung Village, Buthidaung Township, highlighted the importance of preserving literature and culture.
“Just as the saying goes, ‘When literature disappears, the people disappear,’ our Chakma culture and literature had nearly faded away. We want to preserve our traditions and literature. Being able to celebrate National Day so proudly with the support of the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government is a new honor for our ethnic group and also demonstrates equality among all nationalities,” he said.
Chakma student Ko Khine Lin, who attended the ceremony, also shared his feelings:
“In my life, I have never seen our National Day celebrated on such a large scale. Wearing our traditional dress with pride and celebrating together with other ethnic brothers and sisters makes me truly happy. This has strengthened my determination to preserve our literature and culture even more in the future.”

During the event, Chakma literature, traditional foods, clothing, and cultural items were displayed in a museum-style exhibition.
Traditional dances of the Chakma, Rakhine, Mro, and other ethnic groups were also performed. Chakma community members said the celebrations strengthened ethnic unity and harmony among the different groups.
