Schools and healthcare facilities must be safe havens for children and newborn infants. However, due to ongoing conflicts in Myanmar, even these places are no longer safe, resulting in continued loss of life, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned in a statement.

According to UNICEF, an airstrike by the military council targeted a school serving displaced families in Kayah State on October 31, killing three children and injuring five others.

Furthermore, over the weekend in Rakhine (Arakan) State, additional airstrikes hit a temporary healthcare facility, reportedly killing a newborn baby.

Background of Continuous Military Airstrikes in Rakhine State Currently facing severe losses and military defeats across ground battlefields against the Arakan Army (AA), the terrorist military council has been unable to sustain ground operations and has instead resorted to intent, round-the-clock air terror campaigns targeting civilian populations using jet fighters and military aircraft.

Specifically across the Arakan region, the military council has launched heavy airstrikes using jet fighters, Y-12 transport aircraft, and gyrocopters targeting Mrauk-U’s temporary maternity hospital, Kyauktaw’s Yo Chaung Bridge, displacement camps in Kyaukpyu, and residential neighborhoods. These brutal attacks have resulted in dozens of civilian casualties, including newborn babies, women, and innocent residents.

Children and families in Myanmar and Arakan State have already endured years of conflict and forced displacement, and UNICEF emphasized the critical need to protect them from further targeted violence against civilians and humanitarian infrastructure.

UNICEF urges all parties to the conflict to immediately implement all necessary measures to prevent harm to children, schools, and healthcare facilities, reiterating that every child deserves to live in safety.
