A shootout between armed groups inside a Muslim refugee camp in the Teknaf area of Cox's Bazar District, Bangladesh, has left one member of a dacoit (robber) gang dead.

The shooting occurred at around 10:00 PM on May 14 inside H-Block of the Nayapara Muslim Refugee Camp in Teknaf. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Hasan Ahmed, also known as Kala Hasan.

He resided in H-Block, Shed No. 634, and held MRC No. 39225. He was the son of Sultan Ahmed and was formerly an active member of the notorious "Zakir Group" dacoit gang.

Commander Mohammad Kausar Siddique of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) confirmed the details of the incident on May 15.

Citing local sources, it was reported that due to an old grudge, terrorist Saddam Hussein and his group entered the refugee camp heavily armed and opened fire on Hasan Ahmed.

During the attack, a bullet struck the right side of Ahmed's chest. Following the shooting, local residents rescued him and immediately rushed him to the nearby G/K Hospital inside the camp.

He was subsequently referred to a hospital in Teknaf town for further medical treatment but succumbed to excessive bleeding during the transfer.

Following the incident, the attackers fled toward the hills located west of the refugee camp.

According to APBN Captain Kausar, the deceased was a known member of the Zakir Group and had a criminal record, including three pending arms cases, two cases for preparation of robbery, and two kidnapping cases.

Armed conflicts, rivalries, and targeted killings have been continuously erupting inside Muslim refugee camps among members of various armed factions, including ARSA, ARA, RSO, RIM, and ARO.

These persistent violent incidents have left ordinary Muslim refugees living in the camps in a state of extreme fear and anxiety.
