Concerns are mounting that the arrest of displaced Muslim youths by administrative bodies and nationalist extremist groups in Dawbon Township, Yangon Region, may be an attempt to incite racial conflict within the current political climate.

On the evening of May 2, ward administration officials conducted inspections at several houses in Nwe Aye Ward, Dawbon Township, and arrested nearly 50 displaced Muslims who had fled from Rakhine State to that ward.

It is reported that about 50 people in total consisting of 40 displaced Muslim youths who fled the battles in Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships, and 10 teachers providing them with education were arrested and taken away by a combined force of Ma Ba Tha monks and the ward administration team.

According to eyewitnesses, although the detainees possessed official identification documents during the inspection, they were branded as "illegal immigrants" and arrested. It is also stated that the administration team specifically summoned and collaborated with members of extremist groups.

Political observers analyze that such targeted arrests could be intended to expand race-based disputes rather than being a mere security measure.

It is also estimated that during the current revolutionary period, there may be attempts to use extremist movements under the guise of nationalism to increase distrust and division among the public.

Currently, the detainees are still being held at the Dawbon Myoma Police Station, and the lack of an official explanation regarding the case has further heightened political and human rights concerns.

This incident is seen as a factor that could increase instability by fueling racial disputes during Myanmar’s current political transition, and warnings have emerged that it could harm public consensus and unity.
