A boat carrying approximately 400 Muslims who left refugee camps in Bangladesh for Malaysia was fired upon and intercepted by the Myanmar Navy, after which all passengers were arrested, according to reports.
These Muslims departed from Teknaf town (Bangladesh) on November 20. Just one day later, on November 21, while traveling covertly through the Bay of Bengal, they were spotted, shot at, and intercepted by the Myanmar Navy.
As a result of the shooting, more than 10 Muslims sustained serious injuries. The Myanmar Navy then arrested everyone on board and took them to Sittwe (the capital of Rakhine State).
Currently, political conflicts are ongoing in Bangladesh, and inside the Muslim refugee camps, violence is rampant, including power struggles, killings, kidnappings for ransom, and other terrorist acts carried out by various Islamist extremist militant groups. Because of this, large numbers of Muslims are fleeing the camps and, through human traffickers, attempting to reach Malaysia and other foreign countries.
These people from the refugee camps, who have become victims of human trafficking, frequently face arrest or death by drowning when their boats capsize on the dangerous journey to Malaysia and other destinations.
