The Arakkha Health Department has issued an urgent warning for residents in border areas to remain vigilant following a week-long outbreak of measles in neighboring Bangladesh, where the disease has already resulted in several fatalities.
Residents in Maungdaw, Buthidaung, Rathedaung, and Paletwa—towns situated close to the border are specifically urged to take necessary precautions.
Measles is an airborne disease that spreads rapidly through coughing and sneezing. While it can affect individuals of all ages, it is particularly severe and potentially life-threatening for unvaccinated children.
Symptoms to Watch For High fever, cough, and runny nose. Red, watery eyes. The appearance of a widespread red rash 3 to 4 days after the onset of fever. Small white spots (Koplik’s spots) may also appear inside the mouth.
Prevention and Safety Measures: The Arakkha Health Department emphasizes that vaccination is the most effective defense against measles.
Additionally, the public is advised to: Avoid close contact with infected individuals. Reduce travel to crowded areas. Practice frequent handwashing and wear face masks.
If symptoms are detected, the department advises against self-medicating. Instead, patients should be taken to the nearest hospital or clinic immediately. Infected individuals must be isolated to prevent the further spread of the virus to other children.
Furthermore, the Arakkha Health Department urges the public to immediately report any suspected cases in their community to the nearest health authorities. Cooperation from all citizens is essential to contain the spread of the disease.
