Bangladeshi media outlets report that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with another former senior official, was sentenced to death today, November 17, by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for crimes against humanity.
They were convicted for ordering and directing the violent suppression of student-led protests between July and August 2024, during which fatalities occurred. The tribunal found them responsible for actions that constituted crimes against humanity.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan were both handed death sentences.

In addition, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was sentenced to five years in prison.
This marks the first time that a former Bangladeshi prime minister has been convicted of crimes against humanity by the ICT after months of legal proceedings. The tribunal found that the three leaders bore command responsibility for killings, torture, enforced disappearances, and arson carried out by security forces and ruling-party activists.
Prosecutors argued that Hasina had issued orders authorizing the use of helicopters, drones, and lethal weapons, paving the way for systematic and violent crackdowns.
In an exclusive interview with India Today, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina—who is currently in exile—stated that the interim government led by Yunus has firmly aligned itself with extremist militant groups within Bangladesh.
