Bengali Group Destroys House Construction on Legally Owned Chakma Land in Chittagong Hill Tracts

It is reported that in Khagrachhari Township, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh, a group of Bengalis intervened and destroyed the house posts while local Chakma indigenous people were constructing a home on their legally owned land.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of September 11 in Gamaridolai village, when Bajish Chakma was preparing to build a house on land officially registered under his name. A group of Bengali settlers arrived, harassed him, and proceeded to destroy the newly erected house posts.

Regarding the incident, the victim, Bajish Chakma, stated that despite holding legal registration for the land under his name, he was denied the right to construct his home.

He further noted that although the constitution protects the rights of every citizen, the fundamental rights of indigenous people in the hill tracts continue to be repeatedly violated.

In the Chittagong Hill Tracts, protection for the fundamental constitutional rights of indigenous hill populations remains virtually non-existent, leaving them facing continuous oppression and violence by settler Bengali groups.
