Bangladesh has increased security along its coastal border in an effort to prevent the illegal smuggling of fuel into Myanmar, according to reports from Bangladeshi regional media.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard has intensified patrols and strengthened surveillance along coastal and border areas to curb the illicit transport of fuel and other commodities across the border.
Sabbir Alam Sujan, an official from the Bangladesh Coast Guard, said smuggling activities—including fuel trafficking—have risen amid the global energy crisis.
“Due to the global energy crisis, the illegal smuggling of goods, including fuel, from Bangladesh into Myanmar has increased. Therefore, we are strengthening security measures to prevent such activities,” he said.
He added that authorities are prioritizing patrol and monitoring operations along coastal areas and river routes near the border. Continuous patrols are being conducted day and night, particularly in coastal zones, waterways, and areas close to the border to prevent illegal cross-border trade.
Sabbir Alam Sujan said the Bangladesh Coast Guard will continue taking firm action against all forms of smuggling to protect the country’s economic stability and domestic market.
Residents in coastal communities have also been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities related to illegal smuggling.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that fuel demand in Myanmar has surged amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East, triggering panic buying, sharp price increases, and concerns over possible fuel shortages.
