24th Sri Sri Jagannath Ratha Yatra Festival Successfully Concluded with Great Pomp in Maungdaw

In Maungdaw, Arakan, the 24th Sri Sri Jagannath Ratha Yatra (Chariot Pulling) Festival a prominent traditional religious celebration for the Hindu community was grandly held for nine days from July 16 to July 24, successfully concluding yesterday.

This annual festival is a major religious event for Hindus, serving as a reflection of religious faith, cultural tradition, and community solidarity.

During the festival, devotees followed long-standing traditions by placing the image of Lord Jagannath worshiped by Hindus as an avatar of Lord Vishnu onto a decorated holy chariot, carrying it in procession through the town, offering prayers, and performing acts of merit.

This year’s festival was attended not only by local residents of Maungdaw, but also by Hindus who traveled from Buthidaung and Kyauktaw townships. The number of participants on the final day was notably higher than in previous years.

With brightly decorated sacred chariots, devotees dressed in traditional attire, and religious songs echoing through the town, the vibrant event drew keen interest from both local residents and visitors.

In addition to the chariot procession, the festival featured traditional Hindu cultural performances, religious ceremonies, and the distribution of free vegetarian meals (Satuditha) to attendees.

According to Hindu tradition, pulling the ropes of Lord Jagannath's chariot and paying homage to the deity brings auspicious blessings, cleanses past misdeeds, and invokes good fortune.

Local residents noted that holding such traditional religious events not only helps preserve cultural heritage, but also serves as an important occasion to promote mutual respect, understanding, and social harmony among diverse ethnic and religious communities.

Earlier this year in February, another significant Hindu religious event the Maha Ramayana Harinama Rama Festival was also grandly held for four days in Kyauk Pandu, Maungdaw Township.

Members of the Hindu community shared that although the annual Sri Sri Jagannath Ratha Yatra had been suspended in recent years due to security and military conditions, its successful resumption highlights the revitalization of local religious and cultural life, serving as an important milestone to strengthen mutual respect and understanding across diverse communities.
