Airstrike by Military Junta on Civilian Area in Kyaukpyu Township Kills Two Women

Breaking News January 18, 2026

On January 18, 2026, between approximately 12:05 am and 12:52 am, intense aerial and artillery attacks were carried out by the Myanmar military junta on the coastal area near Kyaukkalay village, Kyaukpyu Township.

According to local sources, one fighter jet dropped two bombs on the area. Simultaneously, suicide drones were used to drop around four bombs, while navy vessels fired four rounds of heavy artillery in rapid succession.

The attacks directly struck a location where internally displaced civilians (war-displaced people) were sheltering. Two women were killed instantly from shrapnel injuries:

  • Daw Ma San Shwe, 43 years old (daughter of U Kyaw Aye from Pyat Taw Taung village), suffered shrapnel wounds to the back.

  • Daw Khin San Oo, 40 years old (daughter of U Maung Tin Way from Min Tat Taung village), suffered shrapnel wounds to the lower abdomen.

Both women died on the spot.

Additionally, Daw Ma San Shwe’s mother (name still being confirmed) sustained two serious shrapnel injuries — one above the waist and one on the left thigh. She is currently being transferred with the assistance of the administrative team and village authorities to the hospital for treatment.

Local reports indicate that about 10 displaced civilian households were sheltering in the affected Pinlinhtaung area at the time of the attack.

Further investigation into the aftermath and additional casualties is ongoing.
