In Sittwe, which remains under the control of the Myanmar military, a young Muslim girl lost a leg on April 29 after stepping on a landmine planted by the military forces.

The victim has been identified as 10-year-old Ma Laila from Ohn Taw Gyi Muslim village in Sittwe Township.

According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 3:00 PM on April 29. Ma Laila was searching for firewood with her mother near their village when she stepped on a mine planted by the Myanmar military, resulting in the loss of her right leg.

Similarly, on April 17, a 45-year-old man named Zoyo Gori from the Dah Paing Muslim IDP camp in Sittwe Township also lost a leg after stepping on a mine in the vicinity of the camp.

Furthermore, on May 15, 2024, 38-year-old U Maung Than Hlaing from Sittwe’s Shwe Pyar Ward lost his left leg after stepping on a junta-planted landmine along a riverbank while traveling to Kyay Taw Pike Seit village to visit relatives.

It is reported that the Myanmar military has planted landmines around Sittwe—including along creek banks, near military installations, at the airport, and close to the beach—due to fears of an incursion by the Arakan Army (AA).

Fearing the outbreak of intense fighting in Sittwe, many residents have fled their homes. Those remaining in the city continue to face the dangers of landmines, the threat of arrest by the Myanmar military, and the hardships of severe commodity shortages.
