ULA/AA Honors Local Residents Who Assisted in Buthidaung Boat Capsizing Rescue

A motorboat traveling from Ohn Phauk Village in Rathedaung Township toward Nyaung Chaung (Rakhine) Village in Buthidaung Township capsized on the night of August 30 in waters near Kardi (Muslim) Village, Buthidaung Township, Arakha State.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 PM on August 30. The boat operator, who was intoxicated, departed from Ohn Phauk Village carrying 10 passengers toward Nyaung Chaung (Rakhine) Village in Buthidaung Township.

As the boat approached Kardi (Muslim) Village, strong waves caused water to flood the vessel, leading to its submersion.

Passengers called out for help to nearby residents of Kardi Village, who responded swiftly by launching boats to rescue them. They successfully brought the boat owner and 9 passengers to safety.

However, Soe Moe Kyaw, a schoolteacher stationed at the school in Nyaung Chaung (Rakhine) Village, Buthidaung Township, went missing in the water during the incident and has not yet been found.

The Arakha Government awarded 200,000 MMK each to 6 local residents from Bhura Pyin and Aung Pa (Muslim) villages in Buthidaung Township who participated in the rescue operation, totaling 1.2 million MMK in honorary cash rewards.

The Department of Law Enforcement and Public Security (DLEPS) is taking legal action against the intoxicated boat owner in accordance with established procedures regarding the capsizing incident.
