Two men from Kywi Chai Village, Gwa Township, in the Arakan region, were reportedly arrested for the rape of a woman with a congenital disability on May 1.

The victim is a 25-year-old woman suffering from congenital polio. She was allegedly raped by two fellow villagers, identified as Nga Aung (37) and Sithu Win (38).

The incident came to light after the victim recounted the assault, leading village elders and administrative blocks to notify the local regional authorities. Following the report, the two perpetrators were taken into custody.

Currently, the relevant departments of the ULA/AA government have detained the two suspects and officially opened a criminal case against them.

A similar incident occurred in Mrauk-U Township this past April involving the rape of a minor. The perpetrator in that case was also arrested and charged by the local judicial department.

The Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government is currently conducting awareness programs to reduce the incidence of rape and child molestation in the region. Meanwhile, local residents are calling for the authorities to take the most effective and decisive legal action against those who commit such crimes.
