One Fisherman Killed and Two Injured as Junta Forces Open Fire near Nanthar Island at Sittwe-Rathedaung Border

One fisherman was killed and two others were injured on the morning of August 3 when fascist terrorist junta military forces opened fire on 11 fishermen who were fishing near Nanthar Island (also known as Auck Kyund) at the border of Sittwe and Rathedaung in Arakan.

The deceased has been identified as U Nyunt Chay (47 years old), an IDP from Aung Taing Village in Sittwe Township, currently taking refuge in Ma Kyi Chaung Village, Rathedaung Township.

The two injured are U A Poo Chay (55 years old) and U Maung Maung Tun (33 years old), who are also IDPs from Aung Taing Village residing in Ma Kyi Chaung Village.

According to the victims, at around 4:00 AM on August 3, a group of 11 fishermen comprising nine IDPs from Aung Taing Village and two residents from Ma Kyi Chaung Village left Ma Kyi Chaung Village in three motorized fishing boats to fish at Nanthar Island.

At around 9:00 AM that day, while the 11 fishermen were eating lunch after entering the mouth of a creek at Nanthar Island, a Honda boat carrying two plainclothes junta soldiers and six Muslims arrived at their location and opened fire on them.

The shooting caused the fishermen to scatter in panic. U Nyunt Chay collapsed on the shore, while U A Poo Chay sustained a gunshot wound to his left heel and U Maung Maung Tun suffered a gunshot injury to his right elbow.

Following the attack, the two junta soldiers and six Muslims towed away all three fishing boats belonging to the civilians toward Sittwe.

Upon receiving the news, local security forces arrived at the scene to search for U Nyunt Chay. They found his body on the island's sandy beach, bearing a puncture wound near his right collarbone caused by a sharp iron rod, as well as severe swelling and injuries across his back, chest, and face.

On the evening of August 3, security personnel brought U Nyunt Chay's body back by boat and handed it over to his family members in Ma Kyi Chaung Village for funeral rites.

The two injured fishermen, U A Poo Chay and U Maung Maung Tun, are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.
