On This Day in Arakan History ၊ May 1, 1994

May 1, 1994, marks a critical attempt at revolutionary unity with the formation of the National United Party of Arakan (NUPA). Created through the merger of four nationalist factions, including a wing of the Communist Party of Arakan, NUPA sought to consolidate the fragmented resistance into a single, potent force.

Its armed wing, the Arakan Army (a predecessor to the current namesake), represented a shift toward a more inclusive and strategic struggle for sovereignty. Despite facing immense external pressure, including the 1998 arrests of its leadership on Landfall Island by Indian authorities, NUPA’s ideological foundation remained resilient.

The organization proved that Arakanese nationalism could be both militarily assertive and diplomatically sophisticated.

Its ultimate merger with the United League of Arakan (ULA) on December 6, 2020, stands as a testament to the enduring quest for a "Single Command." This legacy of consolidation continues to fuel the modern movement, reinforcing the belief that only a unified political and military structure can successfully dismantle the "Internal Colony" and achieve the Arakan Dream.
