A civilian was killed after heavy artillery fire from a Myanmar military junta naval vessel positioned offshore near Kyaukphyu town, according to reports by APM.
The incident occurred on the evening of January 30, 2026, when the junta navy allegedly fired at least three artillery shells indiscriminately toward Zin Chaung Village, located in Kyaukphyu Township.
The victim was identified as U Maung Phyu Soe, also known as Khin Maung Htwe, a 45-year-old resident of Zin Chaung Kone Bwe Village. Reports said he was near the coastline between Zin Chaung Village and Kyauk Ka Lay Village when an artillery shell landed and exploded nearby, killing him at the scene.
This was not an isolated incident. On the night of January 14, two civilians from Thaphan Chaung Village, also in Kyaukphyu Township, were reportedly killed after being struck by artillery fire from a junta naval vessel.
Military sources said fighting between the Arakan Army (AA) and junta forces has intensified in the Kyaukphyu area, with clashes becoming increasingly fierce. As the conflict zone expands, junta forces are reported to be sustaining mounting casualties and have responded with repeated artillery shelling and airstrikes targeting areas close to civilian villages.
The ongoing bombardment has forced residents from surrounding communities to flee to safer locations, while reports of additional civilian casualties and injuries continue to emerge.
