On This Day in Arakan History ၊ June 8, 1961

8 June 1961 marks a high point of ethnic political unity in the post-independence period. On this day, Arakanese leaders: U Maung Oo Kyaw and U Thar Htun joined other non-Burman nationalities at the Taunggyi Conference to present the Federal Draft, or Shan Principles, to the government of U Nu.

The proposal sought to reform the 1947 Constitution by establishing a genuine federal system, including recognition of an “Arakan State” as an equal unit with control over its own resources and governance.

This moment reflected a clear vision of equality, self-determination, and protection from centralized dominance. It emphasized shared power within a balanced Union, limiting central authority to key national functions.

Today, its legacy remains highly relevant. The principles outlined at Taunggyi continue to shape political aspirations in Arakan, influencing ongoing struggles for autonomy, federalism, and a more balanced political system in Myanmar.
