On This Day in Arakan History ၊ May 27, 1990

27 May 1990 stands as one of the most important political dates in modern Arakan history, marking the electoral success of the Arakan League for Democracy (ALD) in Myanmar’s multi-party general election. Established on 27 September 1989 under the leadership of Saw Mra Aung, the party emerged as a political platform advocating for Arakanese rights, democracy, and greater self-determination within the Union.

During the election, ALD campaigned strongly on Arakanese political identity and regional representation, gaining widespread public support across Arakan. The party won 11 parliamentary seats, becoming one of the strongest ethnic political parties nationwide and the second-largest political force in Arakan after the National League for Democracy (NLD). Its victories in townships such as Sittwe, Mrauk-U, Kyauktaw, Minbya, and Kyaukphyu reflected a growing political consciousness among the Arakanese population.

The significance of 27 May 1990 lies not only in electoral victory but in the peaceful democratic expression of Arakanese political aspirations. The election demonstrated that the people of Arakan sought to pursue autonomy, equality, and political representation through democratic means rather than armed conflict alone.

However, the military government refused to transfer power after the election. ALD representatives were denied parliamentary participation, and the party itself was eventually banned on 6 March 1992. Many leaders faced arrest, repression, or exile.

In contemporary Arakan history, the 1990 election remains a symbol of denied political legitimacy and unfulfilled democratic aspirations. It continues to influence modern Arakanese political movements seeking greater self-governance, federalism, and recognition of the Arakanese people’s political will.
