On August 12, 2025, the GAN issued a press release announcing the detention of five Bangladeshi fishermen by the Arakan Army for illegal fishing in Arakan territorial waters. As of August 26, 2025, at least 37 individuals are currently under investigation by Arakan authorities for similar offenses.
Some Bangladeshi media outlets have falsely claimed that the fishermen accidentally entered Arakan territorial waters. However, investigations reveal that these incursions were deliberate and repeated, with multiple instances of illegal entry into Arakan waters.
Since August 12, 2025, there have been at least five documented incidents of illegal fishing, as follows:
August 12, 2025: 5 fishermen with one boat.
August 22, 2025: 11 fishermen with one boat.
August 22, 2025: 7 fishermen with one boat.
August 22, 2025: 7 fishermen with one boat.
August 22, 2025: 7 fishermen with one boat.

The four incidents on August 22 occurred at various times between 8 AM and 10 AM near the Arakan coast.
According to official sources, since January 2025, Arakan authorities have detained and subsequently released at least 188 illegal Bangladeshi fishermen and seized 30 fishing boats. The Arakan Army has called on the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) to cooperate in maintaining law and order along the border.
